So Almost the Weekend! And Happy Birthday Bean!

Thursday and only three (and a half) new shows—but two of them look solid!

ABC is going against type with Last Resort. A group of sailors on a submarine defy orders to launch a nuclear attack against Pakistan. After the US comes after them, then they go even more rogue and take over an island—and let the world know what they are up to. I’m mightily intrigued, with Andre Braugher at the helm of the show (and if you’ve never seen Homicide, do not pass go, do not collect $200 until you have. And you’re welcome.)

Even though Scandal had a limited run of seven episodes last season and is technically not new, I’m going to include it here. The power of one’s own blog. Anyway. Simply put, Scandal  is one of my favorite new shows (disclaimer, The West Wing might be my all-time favorite—so you’ll see why in a sec). Set in Washington DC, Kerry Washington plays Olivia Pope, a ‘fixer’ who comes into a crisis and manages it. (btw: loosely based on the real life woman who helped manage the Monica Lewinsky scandal) Fast paced, sharply written and well acted. Trifecta for a solid recommendation!

CBS has what everyone considers the sure thing for the fall, Elementary. Just a short season after House hung up his cane, Sherlock Holmes is back solving crimes in NYC with his Watson, played by Lucy Liu. Yep, Watson is a girl. Johnny Lee Miller—one of my favorite British actors (despite never making it in a Harry Potter movie) with credentials like Eli Stone and  Mansfield Park gets to take on the world's most famous detective. I don’t see how this can not be a hit.

And finally, the CW is rebooting Beauty and the Beast. Despite being my favorite of the Disney films, there will be no Mrs. Potts in this version. Think late 80’s Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton, and you’ve got the reboot. I’m curious enough to check it out a few times, but I can’t quite decide if it is full rotation material.

Okay, we’re just one more blog post away from being done with the new season; have you programmed your DVRs yet?
